The artist is the sitter who always turns up, the model who never is late. Thus I've recently got into the habit of fielding myself as substitute whenever let down in this way; my own studio's eternal twelfth man ever ready to take up position and be painted from whatever palette has been laid out. These paintings are almost invariably one sitting long (two hours or so) though I don't complain at the odd bit of overtime. They are brought together under the title The Twelfth Man without any other planning than the precaution of having many panels prepared of the same size.
The Portrait Works (1989), p. 16-19.
