EXHIBITION VS. EXHIBIT,
or, ENGLISH FOR AMERICANS 101

Confession: I am an American who speaks American, not English. I am blessed with generous British friends who tactfully let me know there's no such thing as a "cricket GAME" (try "match"), and that the American meanings of "rather" and "quite" are the reverse in English English.

And years ago, a friend explained the difference between 'exhibit' and 'exhibition'. An exhibit is a single object. Perry Mason introduces Exhibit A to the jury. An exhibition is a collection of exhibits. I had never been aware of the difference, and ever since then when I say 'exhibition' (using it correctly) I have an added sense of security and comfort. Like clean underwear for one's vocabulary.

Why the attention to the 'exhibit'/'exhibition' relationship? Because Tom has a grand exhibition opening this month in Fort Worth Texas. To celebrate, we'll be putting up selections from the exhibition in our June edition. This puts us in an exhibitionistic mood, so we'll also be putting up the catalogues of Tom's 1997 exhibitions from Dulwich and South London.

While we're at it, here's a list of current and future exhibit[ion] and performance information. Eventually we'll have a special spot for it on the site, but for now we'll just list it here, uncertainties among certainties.
