Autumn has been busy in Peckham -- a quick glance at the list of forthcoming exhibitions makes this clear!
We're happy to provide the details of these upcoming shows, as well as a look back at past projects with this edition's new features.
A letter to the website this August asked the following:
Dear Tom Phillips,
I have a feeling that I once read about a piece of work you made around a shop sign that said Closed or Open depending on which way it was pushed.
The sign you (or someone!) came across was missing the middle section making an unusual word that you tried to decipher.
Was this you? And could you tell me some more about it. If it wasn't you, you don't know who it was do you? Thanks for your help.
Indeed it was Tom, and we thank this letter writer for the (perhaps unwitting, perhaps masterfully suggestive) suggestion.
The work is C LOOPSEEND; it is the last entry in the Royal Academy exhibition catalogue "Tom Phillips: Works & Texts" (1992), and now enjoys being deep in the middle of the more than 2200 pages currently offered on this site.
Also featured this edition is a photoessay by Sara Sackner documenting the work being done in 1980 on the DANTE'S INFERNO project.
I first saw Sara's photos while visiting the Sackner Archive of Visual and Concrete Poetry in Miami Beach. I loved that image I saw of Tom and Nick Tite reviewing the plate, and was floored by the cache of prints Sara loaned me for this special exhibition, 57 in '80. Fond appreciation to Sara for her generosity.
Plus, one last tidbit: a short interview with Tom about the influence of El Greco during Tom's work on Rima's Wall. It's been in my inbox for months, and it's a pleasure to be sharing it with you now. Many thanks to Jane Ure-Smith for the interview.
Here's looking forward to the exhibitions, as well as the new Thames & Hudson trade edition of A HUMUMENT to be released in 2005.
Very cordially yours,
JOHN NICK PULL <editor, tomphillips.co.uk>
